How do you show an entire index, not just one company, in a way people can read at a glance?

Tables and charts are good for looking something up. They are poor at showing relative size, debt, and sector structure across the whole market at once.

A map of the market is only useful if every visual choice means something. TickerTown tests that with real financial data: size, debt, headcount, and sector all have to read correctly at a glance.

It sits where finance, data, and information design meet, and it is a complete product rather than a demo.

I designed the visual model and built the product, from the data to the 3D city to the tools for exploring it.

The visual model

• Every S&P 500 company is a building
• Each sector is a neighbourhood
• Market cap sets the size of the building
• Debt sets the foundation
• Employee count sets the number of windows
• Additional company attributes are encoded as well

Data comes from Yahoo Finance.

Yahoo Finance data feeds the model. Each company’s attributes decide what its building looks like, and its sector decides which neighbourhood it belongs to. Search, filters, historical views, and comparisons let a visitor move from the whole market to a single company.
